When Grandpa Barney Lorang was gathering information for a Family Tree book in 1962, he contacted all his brothers and sisters still living to find stories of the very early days. Henry Lorang wrote this story. Barney, a couple years older, rewrote it and added some memories of his own.
Quite a harrowing story, as each cousin traveled one or two at a time to America, as each could afford it.

Mary’s cousins, from Mehring, Germany, arrived in America in the early 1880’s and then settled near Valley City, North Dakota. Mary kept in contact with her cousins during the trip to Europe in 1910, as John and Mary traveled through North Dakota on the way to and from New York. We are still in contact

Angela Hermann Lorang left her children a message written in old German as she was very ill. Dale Lorang, son of Charles, was able to find someone to translate this for us. Angela’s message was found upside down in a frame in the Log cabin.
