Angela Hermann Lorang and Bernard Lorang with baby Thomas and Maggie. Angela and Bernard Lorang had married in Germany. When Bernard’s mother Maria Lorang died, he immigrated with their 5 children to Wisconsin in 1854. Daughter Anna Catharina died on ship at age 6 and was buried an old log church in Johnsburg. Gertrud Mertes Gesellchen and Peter Gesellchen, with their first baby, we believe, in this daguerreotype. Gertrud Mertes immigrated from Germany with her father Anton and brothers and sisters in 1846. Peter Gesellchen immigrated from Germany on his own in 1846 and met Gertrud when she was 16. The beautiful bay window from inside the Farmhouse. The fountain outside the window would not have been built until 1913, but the window was this beautiful in 1884.

This restored bay window looks as it would in 1885, when John and Mary moved in. Except that the Bay Window would be facing South. It was turned to face the road in 1904. The trees have grown.

When John first arrived in the West, he traveled back and forth to the Moscow mountains, gathering and squaring logs for the railroad. In his travels he would camp at his friends home, William White in Genesee. Here he could view a beautiful little home across the field, just built by William Dillingham on the

John Lorang and Mary Gesellchen married in the Winter of 1884. Two weeks later they boarded an emmigrant train with 9 other friends to travel West. From 1884-1889, no other photographs were taken. But we do have stories of these years, illustrated with the next photographs.
